Philip Klein

Additional Orchestration/Music

Award-winning composer, orchestrator, and conductor Philip Klein provides additional music and orchestration for Nicholas of Myra. Given his expertise in movie music, it is no surprise that familiar film titles are among his recent credits, which include work as Additional Orchestrator on the popular animated hit feature The Tale of Despereaux, and Music Preparation for The Secret Life of Bees. His work is characterized by meticulous orchestrations, sensitive themes and unique harmonic structures.

At Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, Philip designed a specialized degree program in film scoring and personally scored over 30 student films, many of which went on to win festival honors throughout the country. In 2009, his score to Hangar No. 5 won the ATAS Foundation’s Emmy Award for Best Music Composition. He was Orchestrator for the short film Kwame, and also composed the music for other short films (Fast as You Can, 684 Brewster, The Detention Teacher, Anonymous, Fly, and the documentary Rushed). Multimedia credits include providing orchestration assistance to supervising Orchestrator Penka Kouneva for the video games Gears of War 2, Sims 3, and Transformers 2.

In addition to the two well-known feature-length releases mentioned above, Philip provided Additional Orchestration for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Thick As Thieves, as well as assisting Orchestrator Conrad Pope on the films Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Julie & Julia, In My Sleep, Not Forgotten, and Crossing Over. Recently he co-orchestrated 9, the new animated film produced by Tim Burton, and assisted on James Newton Howard’s new concert piece I Would Plant a Tree for the Pacific Symphony. Philip is currently finishing a new concert work to be premiered in Los Angeles in early May.
